Below is an article by Rita Versace, describing her experience at the first ACT Conference she attended.
Something to Remember My First ACT Conference
I can still remember vividly my first ACT conference in 1980. I went enthusiastically, expecting to learn some professional knowledge about spirituality. I was left in great confusion. This was not a professional organization as I had been led to believe. Just what it was, I couldn't have told you. This confusion has stayed with me until recently when I finally figured out what ACT is for me. This understanding clears up my confusion and gives me peace. This is wisdom for me.
To me, ACT is a spiritual organization, in the Christian tradition, for health care professionals and associates in spiritual, mental, emotional and physical health-care organizations, not only in its spiritual dimension. Its uniqueness is reflected in the way the mission statement is implemented.
ACT is an organization of professional people and it is conducted in a professional manner. However, the thrust of the conferences is not professional development and therefore it does not qualify as a professional organization in the usual sense of the world. Rather, the conferences seek to empower those in the healing professions in the Spirit and Truth of Jesus Christ.
To do this the conferences follow a highly unusual method. The method is two-fold. First, the ambience is a spiritual one which provides the possibility for attendees to open themselves to a deepening relationship with God, especially with Jesus.
Secondly, through speakers who, by and large, bring spiritual messages, members are further brought into their own healing. This healing brings them into a deeper relationship with Jesus, the Source of all healing. Through this relationship members are empowered to use their professional training in a more powerful way to heal others.
Every function of ACT brings one into a personal experience, not just an intellectual or professional one. The growth a member experiences is highly personal and ongoing. Spiritual development is followed by professional development.
One Facet of the mission statement is based on the relationship of the members to one another. Three things are stressed. Members are to SUPPORT one another, EMPOWER one another through prayer, and WITNESSS to one another what God is doing in their lives. Abbreviated, this part of the mission statement is SEW. Each member is encourage to belong to a SEW group in which their on-going healing and spiritual growth continues. Thus, members find themselves belonging to a very meaningful community. The closeness one feels to other members likens ACT to a family.
